India finalises labour agreements with Malaysia, Oman, Bahrain

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Amidst increasing incidents of maltreatment of Indian workers in the Gulf and other countries, the Government today finalised labour agreements with Malaysia, Oman and Bahrain.
The agreements, to be signed shortly, aim to secure Indian emigrants against exploitation and abuse in the host countries.

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, which clinched the agreements, plans to sign MoUs with important labour receiving countries of Central and East Europe, official sources said here.

There are about five million migrant workers from India in the Gulf countries, including 1.2 million in the UAE.

Earlier today, the Union Cabinet had approved social security agreements with the Netherlands and Germany.

For short-term contract of up to five years no social security contribution would need to be paid under the Dutch law by Indian workers provided they continue to make security payment in India. PTI
