The vehicle was developed in six months

HUBLI: Students of Automobile Engineering of B.V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology (BVBCET) have developed an “air-powered vehicle” that runs on compressed air.

T. Veeramahanteshswamy, head of the Department of Automobile Engineering, BVBCET, told presspersons here on Friday that a team of students, Summan S. Kanchan, Sanjay Dharmadas, Srikanth Maliye and Reyaz Ahmed Yarzari, had developed the vehicle under the guidance of lecturer Krishnaraj G. Kodancha.

Summan Kanchan said: “Expansion of compressed air drives the pistons in the air power cylinder (pneumatic cylinder). The only exhaust gas is cold air (-15 degree centigrade), which may also be used for air conditioning in car. The source for air is a pressurised compressed ignition tank holding air at 147 bars and air is delivered to the pneumatic cylinder via PU-tubes.”

“Compressed air is one such technology where a vehicle can be designed to have one or several tanks where you put compressed air. This air goes to an air motor, converting the potential energy of the compressed air to kinetic energy to drive the vehicle,” he said.

Speaking on their project, Sanjay, Srikanth and Reyaz said that the air-powered vehicle would give a mileage of 60 km per cylinder. “We used compressed oxygen cylinders available in the market. The 44-litre cylinder costs Rs. 220. Compressed air cylinders also can be used,” they said.

Prof. Krishnaraj said the vehicle was developed in six months at as cost of Rs. 35,000.
